The number of us wanting to lose weight fast and effortlessly has probably never been higher. For those seeking the quick fix, could green coffee extract hold the key to low cost, low effort weight loss? .
A recent study published in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity Journal showed average weight loss of 17 pounds in those taking the extract. No other efforts such as increase in exercise or reduction in calories were made. This was a 22 week randomised, double blind placebo-controlled cross over study to evaluate safety and weight reduction in the participants. The results were quite amazing and no doubt will make pleasant reading to anyone wanting to lose weight.
The magic ingredient
Green coffee is simply unroasted coffee beans. Scientists believe that the antioxidant chlorogenic acid which is found in the beans may be responsible for the weight loss. This is also known to help stabilise blood sugar levels.
This recent study also showed a small decrease in heart rate which is generally regarded as an improvement in health. Earlier studies have also shown that green coffee extract was useful for reducing high blood pressure. Green coffee is a powerful antioxidant meaning it helps fight free radical damage which can lead to cell damage and even cancer.
How do I know which supplement is best?
Look for supplements which are decaffeinated (caffeine does not suit everyone!). I usually recommend a dose of 400mg twice daily*. I like Lamberts Pure Green Coffee extract (available from Nutricentre on 0208 752 8450. Quote ZZLE010 for 10% off).*Not recommended if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
The downside of the study is that it was very small in study terms – only 16 participants were involved however other earlier studies including those on mice, have shown similar results so maybe it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee!
